Steve Bliss: It’s my pleasure, Brenda. I’m always happy to discuss the importance of estate planning.

Many people put off estate planning, thinking it’s only for the wealthy or something they can deal with later. What would you say to someone who feels that way?
Steve Bliss
It’s a common misconception that estate planning is solely for the affluent. In reality, anyone with assets, regardless of their value, can benefit from having an estate plan in place.
Think about it this way: if something were to happen to you unexpectedly, who would manage your finances? Who would care for your minor children? Without a will or trust, these decisions are left up to the courts, which may not align with your wishes.
Moreover, estate planning isn’t just about what happens after you pass away. It can also help protect you during your lifetime. For instance, establishing powers of attorney allows trusted individuals to make financial and healthcare decisions on your behalf if you become incapacitated.

That makes a lot of sense. You mentioned wills and trusts. Could you elaborate on the process of crafting these documents?
Steve Bliss
Certainly. Determining goals and objectives is a critical first step in estate planning. You need to clearly define your wishes for how your assets will be distributed and managed, considering the needs of your family and any personal or charitable goals you may have.
Once you have a clear understanding of your objectives, we can then work together to create legal documents that reflect those wishes. Ordinarily, this involves drafting a will, which outlines how your assets will be distributed after your death.
A trust can be a more complex but advantageous option in some cases, as it allows for greater control over how and when assets are disbursed.
I recall one client who was deeply concerned about ensuring her daughter’s financial stability. Her daughter had struggled with managing finances in the past. Consequently, we decided to create a trust that would provide her daughter with monthly stipends rather than a lump sum inheritance, which ultimately provided peace of mind for both.
Studies show that nearly 70% of Americans do not have an estate plan (caring.com). Don’t let yourself become part of that statistic.

That’s incredibly insightful, Steve. Thank you for sharing those examples. What would you say to someone who is hesitant to begin the estate planning process?
Steve Bliss
I understand that estate planning can seem daunting. It often involves confronting complex emotions and sensitive family matters.
Nevertheless, it’s crucial to remember that estate planning is ultimately an act of love and responsibility. By taking the time to plan ahead, you are ensuring that your loved ones will be cared for according to your wishes, even after you are gone.
